Briefs: Businesses join Partners
Several businesses have recently joined Libertyville Elementary District 70's Partners for Excellence in Education. Businesses returning to the partnership include Domino's Pizza and architect Mike Kollman with Wexler Kollman PC Ltd. John Griparis and Jack Griese run the Domino's Pizza at 115 W. Rockland Road, Libertyville. Kollman is president of Wexler Kollman PC Ltd., of Prairie View. Partners for Excellence in Education is a group of local businesses representatives who offer their time and financial donations to the district. Money raised by the group is used to help establish new programs at the schools.
Library to offer bags
You can help the environment and carry your library books more easily by buying a Live Green reusable bag at the Vernon Area Public Library in Lincolnshire. The bags will be available for $1 at the patron-services desk starting April 22.
Story sessions at library
The Cook Memorial Public Library District's Vernon Hills branch offers drop-in storytimes for preschoolers and their caregivers this month. The sessions will be at noon every Tuesday. Participants should bring lunch. Attendance is free. The library is in the lower level of village hall, 290 Evergreen Drive.
Kids win Golden Apples
Libertyville High School student Nicole Krampien and Wauconda High student Amanda Merker were among the 125 Illinois high-school and college students named Golden Apple Scholars, the program announced this week. In exchange for college financial aid, the winners must agree to teach for five years in an Illinois school serving low-income students or one that has low test scores.
Parenting author to appear
The Barrington Area Unit District 220 PTO Presidents' Council is hosting a presentation by Madeline Levine, author of the New York Times best-selling book, "The Price of Privilege: How Parental Pressure and Material Advantage Are Creating a Generation of Disconnected and Unhappy Kids." The program is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in the Barrington High School gymnasium, 616 W. Main St. Levine will talk not only about her book, but also address trends she is seeing around the country and how other communities are dealing with those concerns.
