Warrenville supports cancer center

The Warrenville City Council passed a resolution Monday supporting a bid by Central DuPage Hospital to build a $125 million proton therapy cancer center in the city's Cantera development. A public hearing on the Winfield hospital's project is scheduled for 9 a.m. at Warrenville city hall, 28W701 Stafford Place. Both Central DuPage and Northern Illinois University have been rushing to be the first to get state approval to build similar treatment centers in the Western suburbs. Only five such facilities, which use proton beams rather than standard radiation to treat a variety of cancers, exist in the country. The Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board gave NIU the go-ahead last week to begin construction on its proton therapy center.
