New fire chief says 'thanks' for support

While being sworn in Monday as the new Buffalo Grove fire chief, Terrence Vavra took time out to thank the five people he said have helped make a difference in his life.

Vavra recognized his mother, father, wife and two daughters with red roses and thanks for supporting him in his career.

The former deputy chief of the Lisle-Woodridge fire department was officially sworn in Monday by Judge Charles Johnson, a former village trustee.

A large group of firefighters -- some new co-workers and some old -- also came out to see Vavra on his first day on the job.

"I'm honored that you're here," he said. "I'm incredibly excited to be a part of this village."

Here's to 30 more years: The board also recognized another village employee Monday night for the work he's done in the past 30 years.

Greg Boysen, director of public works, was lauded for his time with Buffalo Grove since he was hired on Feb. 21, 1978.

Among other achievements, Boysen is credited for working with the transportation departments in Cook and Lake counties to get major road improvements done, overseeing building improvements and expansions and leading the village's conversion from well to Lake Michigan water.

"It's been a great honor and privilege to serve this community," he said.

Cut down on the garbage: Long Grove has compost bins available at village hall. Those interested can purchase them for $40, with checks made payable to SWALCO.

Trustee Karen Schmitt said last week that the bins have already helped her reduce the amount of trash she has to put out.

Vote on water in the future? Long Grove may put a question of water to a vote.

Trustee Ed Acuna brought up the idea last week when updating the board on the Lake Michigan water feasibility study.

He said if the town -- now on a well system -- gets allocation for water and gets an estimate on cost before November, it might be a good idea to put a referendum on that ballot.

Donate blood: Buffalo Grove will hold a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Alcott Center, 530 Bernard Drive. For more information, call (847) 459-2530 or e-mail info@vbg.org.
