Scholarship deadlines nearing
Illinois Sheriffs' Association
Sheriff Keith Nygren of McHenry County announced recently that the Illinois Sheriffs' Association will be awarding more than $52,500 in college scholarships throughout the state of Illinois to students wishing to pursue higher education during 2008-09 academic years.
Sheriff Nygren will be awarding one scholarship in the amount of $500.
The scholarship is to be applied to tuition, books and fees only. The students must be enrolled full-time at a certified institution of higher learning within the state of Illinois. There will be no restriction on any applicant by reason of race, age, creed, color, sex or national origin. The only limitation is as follows:
• Applicants must be permanent Illinois residents
• Applicants applying to the McHenry County Sheriff's office for this scholarship must be a resident of McHenry County.
• Scholarship must be utilized at institutions of higher learning within the state of Illinois
• Students must be enrolled as a full-time student during the 2008-2009 school year, excluding summer session.
Applications are available at your local sheriff's office or on the Internet at www.ilsheriff.org. Students must complete the application, answer the essay question and return all documentation to the sheriff's office in their permanent county of residency by March 15.

McHenry County Civil War Round Table
The McHenry County Civil War Round Table has announced its 2008 annual high school scholarship essay contest.
This year's award for $1,000 is available to any senior student from McHenry County's public or private high schools.
The award is based on submission of a 500-word essay based on a Civil War topic and will be graded by a committee from the Round Table organization. Copies of the essay topic and necessary application forms will be available from school guidance counselors or through the Round Table Web site www.mchenrycivilwar.com.
Essay entries must be accompanied by a completed application form and must be mailed to Scholarship-McHenry County Civil War Round Table, P.O. Box 1865, McHenry, IL 60051 no later than April 16.
General Assembly Scholarship
College students residing in the 64th Legislative District are invited to pick up a General Assembly Scholarship application from state Rep. Michael Tryon's district office.
The General Assembly Scholarship program awards eight one-year, tuition-only scholarships to the University of Illinois or any other public university in the state, and is judged by a scholarship committee, according to Rep. Tryon, a Crystal Lake Republican.
"It is wonderful to be able to promote our state university system and reward some of our children for their hard work," Tryon said. "This is one of the most fulfilling jobs of a state legislator."
To qualify for the General Assembly Scholarship, students must meet these requirements:
• The student must be enrolled in a degree-granting program for the 2008 Fall and 2009 Spring semesters
• The student must be a resident of the 64th Legislative District
• The student must show evidence of good grades and leadership potential as demonstrated through extracurricular activities
• The student must be planning to continue his or her education within the Illinois state university system
"College can be a tremendous tool for our young adults working to make their way in the world. I am very happy to be involved in the process, helping students achieve their goals," Tryon added.

General Assembly Scholarship
State Rep. Jack Franks, a Woodstock Democrat, announced eight, one-year, full tuition General Assembly Scholarships to be awarded to current high school seniors. The scholarships will waive 12 months of full tuition for those students to be enrolled in a degree granting program at Illinois public universities in the fall.
Under general guidelines set by state Rep. Jack Franks, specific criteria is determined and administered by the guidance departments of eight McHenry County high schools. Applications must be obtained and submitted to the respective high school where each graduating senior currently attends. Schools must return applications by May 1.
To qualify, a student must live in the current 63rd Legislative District. Rep. Franks plans to present the General Assembly Scholarship at each high school awards assembly or graduation this spring.

Auxiliary of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital
The Auxiliary of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital is once again offering scholarships for students residing in the hospital service area who will attend school in Illinois and pursue an education in a health-related field.
The service area includes these ZIP codes: 60010, 60012, 60013, 60014, 60021, 60042, 60047, 60050, 60051, 60060, 60067, 60073, 60074, 60084, 60098, 60102, 60110, 60118, 60156, 60192, 60194 and 60195.
The number of scholarships to be awarded will be based on the numbers and qualifications of applicants. Current references, transcripts, and proof of acceptance from the institution and acceptance into a health care professional program are required. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of attitude and desire toward education, leadership, citizenship, personality and financial need.
Applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered and filed with the Auxiliary Scholarship Committee no later than April 30.
