Des Plaines History Center to host book talk October 6

"If a Store Could Talk…The Spiegler Family Remembers," written by award-winning author Allan Spiegler, is the story of his great-grandparents, Louis and Minnie Spiegler, who founded a general store in Des Plaines in 1900. Four generations ran it as a department store for 90 years. This local store had a major impact on the community of that area in supplying the basic necessities as well as the comforts of life, and the family was deeply involved in various business, civic, social and church organizations.

There are many interesting and humorous anecdotes as well as insights into the past which not only tell us who we were, but who we are today. The development of the store and the town are highlighted in the broader context of national historical events starting with the early Native Americans to the Cold War era. Many older photographs and some newspaper articles included in the book give a clearer picture of the changes in the last century portraying an era when local downtown business centers flourished.

There will be a book talk and signing event by the author at the Des Plaines History Center on 781 Pearson Street in Des Plaines from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 6. Refreshments will be served. You may call (847) 391-5399 for further information.

If a Store Could Talk...The Spiegler Family Remembers will available at the History Center and at all major online booksellers.
