TV judge to join in Black History Month play

Tickets are still available for Powerhouse Productions' 10th anniversary performance -- "A Message to Our Future" -- at Schaumburg's Prairie Center for the Arts Saturday.

A special guest, Judge Greg Mathis of TV fame, will join the young cast for the evening performance of this Black History Month tradition.

Each year, the play and the particular theme are new. This year's setting is a detention classroom where a group of teens talk about dropping out of school to pursue dreams that seemingly don't require an education.

One of the teens is also struggling with a pregnancy.

In the evening performance, Mathis plays the role of the one who helps the teens see the error of their thinking.

The main evening performance begins at 7 p.m. at the Prairie Center, 201 Schaumburg Court, next to the village municipal center.

There is also a matinee performance at 2 p.m. the same day. Mathis will not appear in that performance.

Native cinema: The American Indian Center's Trickster Gallery in Schaumburg continues its Friday movie nights tonight with a 6 p.m. screening of "Dance Me Outside."

In the film, director Bruce McDonald explores the relationship between life on an American Indian reservation and in the outside world.

When American Indian Silas Crow is forced to write a personal essay to get a job, he tells of the murder of an American Indian girl by a drunken thug. After the killer receives a lenient two-year sentence for manslaughter, the American Indian community struggles to deal with the aftereffects of this lack of justice.

Admission to the film is $5. A discussion will immediately follow the screening.

Fresh popcorn, candy and drinks are available at these movie nights.

Next week's film is "Pow Wow Highway."

The Trickster Gallery is at 190 S. Roselle Road, in the Town Square development at the southwest corner of Schaumburg and Roselle roads.
