Buffalo Grove not after milestones
In what could have been his final regular-season game as the Buffalo Grove girls basketball coach, Tom Dineen watched yet another impressive anecdote to a program he has filled with so much history for 29 seasons.
Senior Allison Mocchi became the 12th Bison to score 1,000 points for the Hall of Fame coach, who is retiring from teaching after this school year.
The 5-foot-10 guard headed to Northwestern tossed home 10 points in about 25 minutes because of foul trouble as the Bison eventually pulled away from Conant for a 48-28 Mid-Suburban League crossover triumph at the Perry Gymnasium in Hoffman Estates.
Allison (1,004 points) gives Dineen three 1,000-point scorers on what might be his final BG squad.
Ellen Ayoub, who played only 17 minutes due to foul trouble, has 1,771 points while Allison's twin Maggie has 1,591.
"It's a big accomplishment but stats are not our main goal and obviously tonight we did not play well," Allison said. "I'm happy it happened but wish it would have happened on a night when we played better."
A steal and layup by Emma Loos gave Conant an 11-8 lead after one quarter. Michelle Rawleigh's 3-pointer put Conant on top 14-12 but BG got a 3-pointer by Ayoub and a layup by Alisson Mocchi to take the lead for good.
Lauren Angotti's layup off Allison Mocchi's nice pass from the baseline made it 22-16 at the break.
Maggie Mocchi scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the second half as BG outscored the hosts 26-12.
"I was concerned coming in that they (Conant) would want the score in the 20s or 30s," Dineen said. "They wanted to go with the Princeton-style offense with multiple passes and hope that we would fall asleep. And we did at times."
But Dineen liked the way his club was awake in the second half, despite not having Ayoub or Allison Mocchi most of the time due to foul trouble.
"I thought we accomplished what we wanted to, especially in the second half," Dineen said. "In the first half, I didn't think we were finishing well and we were turning the ball over.
"We overcame huge foul trouble in the second half and our kids who came in really sustained things for us and finished well."
Those players were Lauren Angotti, Stacey Lialios and Heather Nisbet, who started and then returned in the second half.
Rawleigh led Conant (22-5) with 12 points while Zades had 9.
"We win ugly, and its hard to win ugly against a team like Buffalo Grove," said Cougars coach Dan Travers. "They are too good. And we made too many mistakes. We let our nerves get to us.
"I wish them luck in the state tournament. We'll put this game behind us and go forward from here."
"We overcame some negatives and finished well against a nice club," said Dineen, who was honored prior to the game for his ensuing retirement. "Dan does a nice job."
Hoffman 47, Elk Grove 31: Junior Megan Fischer (5 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists) scored 20 points and freshman Jada Stotts added 9 with 4 rebounds for Hofman (20-7), which posted it first 20-win season since the early 1990s.
"Megan Evans (junior) gave us a great defensive game on Ashley Capotosto (8 points) and Jada had a great game," said Hawks first-year coach Mike Nocella.
Krystina Leazer led Elk Grove (14-13) with 15 points.
Fremd 64, Prospect 53: Sam Thelin (13 points), Kaitlin Jones (12) and Tracey Nachtsheim (11) led Fremd (15-10) to its ninth win in 10 games.
Prospect (15-11) was led by Megan Murray (12), Lexi Glennon (10) and Rachel Hunt (9).
Hersey 54, Barrington 43: Megan Rogowski (20 points), Sarah Stoltzner (16) and Kelly Rogowski (12) led Hersey (10-18) which received another stellar defensive game from Amanda Slove.
Emma Kuhns added 9 rebounds for the Huskies and Kelly Rogowski had 5 assists and 5 steals.
The Fillies (5-24) were led by Samantha Beach's season-high 16 points while freshman Sarah Mass had 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.
"Sarah did a lot of good things for us," said Fillies coach Babbi Barreiro, whose team was 13-of-40 from the field.
Palatine 47, Meadows 35: Junior center Katie MacFabe scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Pirates (9-20) while senior Megan Boecher added 15. Meadows (6-21) was led by junior Maddy Urban's 13 points.
Maine West 40, Glenbrook South 25: Mary Kusner (12 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocked shots and 2 steals) and Brittany Begrowicz (11 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists) led Maine West (22-7) to the Central Suburban League crossover win over Glenrbook South (19-5).
Glenbrook South (7-2) is tied for first in the CSL South while Maine West (9-0) has clinched the North.
Samantha Acosta added 8 points for West while Colleen Vana had 4 assists. Erin Baumstark had 5 points and 2 assists for the winners.
South Elgin 60, Bartlett 55: South Elgin sophomore Lindsey Helton grew up in a hurry.
With Storm starting point guard Genevieve Johnson out of the lineup because of family reasons, Helton was running the show.
And run it she did.
The sophomore scored 9 of her 11 points in the fourth quarter of the Storm's 60-55 Upstate Eight Conference girls basketball victory over Bartlett Tuesday night in South Elgin.
"I'm from Bartlett, so I wanted to beat them really bad," said Helton, who found out she would be starting on Tuesday morning. "I was comfortable in the beginning (of the game), then in the middle I got frustrated. I got more comfortable at the end."
As Helton's comfort level rose, so did the Storm's. After consecutive South Elgin turnovers had brought Bartlett (8-18, 4-5) back to within 55-51 with 1:37 remaining, Helton nabbed one of her 4 steals, ran the length of the court and put the Storm (14-12, 5-5) up 57-51. She finished the fourth quarter going 4 of 5 from the floor, including banking in a 3-pointer to make it 54-45 with 3:14 left. Helton was 0 of 6 from the floor in the first 3 periods.
Storm junior center Courtney Kumerow (16 points, 10 rebounds) converted a pair of 3-point plays in the fourth period.
Freshman center Jacki Gulczynski helped Bartlett stay in the game when she put in 8 of her team-high 14 points in the third quarter.
Gulczynski (8 rebounds) went 4 of 6 in the third period after shooting 1 of 7 in the first half. The freshman finished the second half 5 of 8. But it was the Hawks' defensive effort that had coach Denise Sarna upset after the game.
"We gave up way too many points," she said. "I was excited in the first quarter when we held them to 6 points. Our defense proceeded to fall from there."

Streamwood 36, Elgin 32: Behind a balanced attack and a huge offensive push from Krissy Kunavich, who collected 19 points and 6 rebounds to lead all scorers, Streamwood (4-21, 1-8) earned its first Upstate Eight Conference win of the season Tuesday night, downing Elgin 36-32 at Chesbrough Field House.
Ryanne Mark added 7 points for the Sabres, and Kim Hotovy finished with 4 points.
Junior guard Caris Alan had a big day for the Maroons (1-23, 1-9) scoring 14 points. Ellen Holton added 6 points.
