GOP incumbents hold own in McHenry County board race
Republican incumbents Tuesday easily earned nomination spots for District 3 on the McHenry County Board.
Mary Donner and Nick Provenzano edged out challengers James Schlader, a Nunda Township trustee, and Kurt Milliman, a Prairie Grove business consultant.
With all precincts reporting, each incumbent took about 32 percent of the vote, with the challengers taking in about 17 percent each.
Donner, a paralegal from Crystal Lake, has served on the county board since 2006. A member of the planning and development committee, Donner's campaign focused on boosting development and protecting aquifers.
"My strength is in zoning and land use," Donner said. "Thank goodness Chairman Koehler saw that as a strength in me and put me on the planning and development committee as a freshman."
Provenzano, a business development director in McHenry, is a two-term board member. His priorities include finding solutions to transportation funding, finishing and passing the 2030 Land Use Plan and creating a regionally-based groundwater protection program.
Donner and Provenzano will face Democrat Kathleen Bergen Schmidt, who did not have a primary challenger, in the November election.
