Briefs: 911 phones may not work

Mount Prospect officials are warning that most major cellular companies this week shut down their analog cell phone service and that analog cellular telephones will no longer be able to call 911. Digital cell phones are unaffected. A vast majority of the phones distributed by the Mount Prospect Police Department and other agencies for people to make 911 emergency cell are analog. People who received a free 911 emergency cell phone from the Mount Prospect Police Department or another agency should take their cell phone to any local cell phone retailer and have them check if the phone is analog and affected by this change. If your cell phone is analog, police will try to replace the it with a digital cell phone. However, only a limited number are available at this time, village officials said.
