Holocaust speaker tonight
Father Patrick Desbois, a French Roman Catholic priest who has spent the past four years interviewing hundreds of eyewitnesses, bystanders as well as collaborators to the killing of 1.5 million Jews in the Ukraine during the Holocaust, will discuss his research and findings at 7 p.m. today at North Shore Congregation Israel, 1185 N. Sheridan Road, Glencoe. He will be interviewed by Paul Shapiro, director of the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, which is co-sponsoring the event.
Ticket deadline is today
Tickets for the seventh Rolling Meadows Community Prayer Breakfast must be purchased by today. Tickets for the event, scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Saturday at The Community Church of Rolling Meadows, 2720 Kirchoff Road, are available at Community Church, Kingdom Life House of Prayer, Cardinal Drive Church of Christ, Meadows Baptist Church, Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Colette Catholic Church and Bethel Lutheran Church or by calling (847) 255-5510. They are $10 each. The speaker will be Chaplain Major Steve Cooper of the Illinois Army National Guard, who has 17 years of military service and was stationed in Iraq from January 2004 through February 2005.
Watch meetings set
Des Plaines police will host three Neighborhood Watch beat meetings on Feb. 27, Feb. 28 and March 5. The first meeting will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at St. Stephens Church, Room 13, 1267 Everett Lane. A second meeting will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 at Des Plaines city hall, 1420 Miner St. A third meeting will be at 7 p.m. March 5 at Prairie Lakes Community Center, 515 E. Thacker St.
Atheism discussed Tuesday
Agnosticism, humanism and atheism will be the topic at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Countryside Unitarian Universalist Church in Palatine. Participants will talk about "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins and have the opportunity to view a DVD of the author's 15-minute presentation of his book. All comments are welcome. The church is at 1025 North Smith Road. Participants are asked to enter the north door and look for Room No. 6.
District 93 wants input
Carol Stream Elementary District 93 is seeking input from parents, community members and staff to update its strategic plan. The district serves portions of Carol Stream, Bloomingdale, and Hanover Park. A survey has been developed based on a review of the challenges and needs facing the district in the next five years. The deadline for participating is March 5. A copy of the survey is included in the district's most recent Community Connections newsletter. The survey also can be filled out at www.ccsd93.com. Anyone who doesn't have Internet access may visit any District 93 school to access the online survey. Completed surveys also can be returned by mail.
Scholarships available
The Friends of Volo Bog is offering two scholarships for $1,000 each to outstanding students interested in pursuing environmental careers. Applications can be found at www.friendsofvolobog.org and must be postmarked no later than Feb. 29. Applicants must live in Lake, McHenry, Kane, Cook, DuPage, Kendall or Will County, attend a high school in one of these counties, have a minimum B average for the first three years, and plan to attend an accredited college or university. The applicant should be planning to enter a career directly related to preserving the environment. To be eligible for the continuing college scholarship applicants must have graduated from a high school from one of these counties with a minimum B average; currently hold a minimum B average in their college studies; and should be on a course study leading to a career directly related to preserving the environment.
Essayists receive laptops
Third-graders from around the suburbs received laptop computers Sunday for winning essays answering the question, "How can a laptop change your community and change your world?" The following suburban students were among the 33 Illinois third-graders who won the contest: Tyler Bentsen of Central Elementary School in Lake Bluff, Jared Garner of Gurnee Grade School in Gurnee; Grant Haen of Schiesher Elementary School in Lisle; Adrian Holubek of Indian Grove Elementary School in Mount Prospect and Grace Keller of Liberty Elementary School in Carpentersville. Lt. Governor Pat Quinn announced the winners of the statewide essay contest Sunday. The XO laptop is a compact, durable, energy-efficient machine created especially for children living in the most remote environments.
