PREP learns from Rockford loss

The Prospect/Rolling Meadows/Elk Grove/Palatine hockey team endured a rough start in Metro Northwest Scholastic Cup competition.

Going 0-2-0 in its first two games and being outscored 15-0 was not what PREP coach Bob Sibik had in mind.

But after a 7-0 defeat against Rockford, Sibik said he liked what he saw.

"We put up a good fight," Sibik said. "We just don't match up well. They're a good team."

Sibik's team was looking for a spark to help turn things around, and they found it by tying injury-plagued Buffalo Grove/Wheeling 3-3 Sunday.

"We played really physical," Sibik said. "We played a great game."

In other action, PREP tied BG/Wheeling again 3-3.

Both teams have one more game left in the Scholastic Cup. PREP (0-3-2) will play Fremd on at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at West Meadows Ice Arena.

BG/Wheeling will play Fremd on at 9:10 p.m. Wednesday at Hoffman Estates Ice Arena. BG/Wheeling (1-2-2) is 2 points ahead of Fremd (1-1-0), but Fremd has four games left.

Blackhawk Cup

PREP took the new-found confidence into its first game of the Blackhawk Cup, the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois state tournament.

PREP defeated Guerin 4-3 Tuesday and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the varsity combined division. PREP will play Bloomington-Normal High School, a winner over Conant/Hoffman Estates/Schaumburg.

"We went up 4-1 and kind of backed off," Sibik said of the win over Guerin. "It shouldn't have been that close."

Joining PREP in the Sweet 16 of the AHAI tourney will be Buffalo Grove/Wheeling, which thrashed Elgin/Larkin/Streamwood 9-0 on Feb. 6.

BGW advanced to play either Latin or Glenbard North High School.

BGW coach Bob Wagner said he was most impressed by the crowd turnout.

"We had a lot of BGW fans there for that game," Wagner said. "It was great to see."

Founder's Cup

Carmel 2, Hersey 1: Hersey lost its second 1-goal game to Carmel this postseason.

"We didn't play our best game," said Hersey coach Pat Schey. "Stupid penalties killed us."

Hersey 4, Huntley 2: Hersey rebounded after its loss to Carmel by beating Huntley despite having only eight players. Leading the Huskies was defenseman James Boruta with 4 points (3 goals, 1 assist).

Hersey is competing in the Blackhawk Cup Varsity White Division and will play Andrew in a Sweet 16 game.

Huntley 5, CHS 1: CHS fell to 0-3-0 after a loss that eliminated CHS from the Metro Founder's Cup.

"We were just outplayed," said coach John Conenna.

CHS 5, Carmel 0: CHS captured its first win, without the help of coach John Connena.

"I switched places with my son, who is the JV coach, for the game," Conenna said. "Fortunately we won, but unfortunately I might be out of a job next year."

BGW needs players: Current or future Buffalo Grove and Wheeling High School students interested in playing next season should contact coach Bob Wagner at (708) 268-8728.
