Three in Rt. 59 crash still in hospital
Three people remained hospitalized late Thursday -- one in extremely critical condition -- following a four-vehicle crash in Streamwood Wednesday evening.
A Bartlett woman was in critical condition at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates. She was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her husband, who's in serious condition at St. Alexius. Their names haven't been released, but they're both about 60 years old.
Also injured was the driver of the vehicle that struck them and rolled over. That unidentified Schaumburg man, who police said is 47 or 48, was listed in serious condition at Sherman Hospital in Elgin.
Police and paramedics were called to the collision on Route 59 between Lake Street and Irving Park Road at 6:10 p.m. Wednesday.
Streamwood police Cmdr. Dan Barnes said a northbound Ford Taurus driven by the Schaumburg man crossed over into the southbound lane of Route 59 and struck the oncoming Toyota Yaris carrying the Bartlett couple.
It's not yet known why the Schaumburg man's vehicle entered the southbound lane, Barnes said.
The collision caused the Taurus to flip over. In the aftermath of the initial collision, two following vehicles were also struck. But neither of the those drivers -- a 66-year-old Geneva man and a 58-year-old Naperville man -- required treatment.
Police garnered details of the wreck after hours of investigation and interviews with many witnesses who saw the collision from the southbound perspective, Barnes said.
But police are still looking for witnesses who saw the collision from the northbound lanes, he added. They can provide much needed help, he said, by calling Streamwood police at (630) 736-3700.
