Tyszkiewicz tops trey record against Triton
Ryan Tyszkiewicz' College of DuPage teammates were aware that he was in position to break the school's all-time career 3-pointer record during last Saturday's game against Triton, and they tried to encourage him to go for it.
But all that was doing was disrupting the 6-foot-1 sophomore's ability to focus.
"They were excited for me but that just got my mind away from the game," said Tyszkiewicz (Willowbrook). "And I wasn't hitting my shots."
He finally decided to concentrate on his all-around game and the shots started to fall.
He went on to tie the record in the first half, set the new standard of 129 career 3-pointers after the break, finishing the game with 12 points all on long-range shots.
In setting the record, Tyszkiewicz surpasses the mark of 126 set by Rick Horstmann in 1994-96.
Tyszkiewicz will have a chance to add to his total when the Chaps begin the Region IV, Division III playoffs at Harper at 7 p.m. Thursday.
"It's exciting to have set the record," said Tyszkiewicz. "I had 60 last year and we went deep into the playoffs, so I didn't know if I could come close this year."
COD coach Don Klaas said that Tyszkiewicz sometimes amazes him with his outside shooting ability.
"His high school coach told me Ryan could shoot," said Klaas. "But his 3s often come from way beyond the 3-point line. He may even be a little better from 7 feet beyond the line."
While he is proficient from the perimeter, that is hardly the only facet to Tyszkiewicz's game
"Ryan plays as solid a defensive game as anyone we've had," Klaas said. "Because we're small, he's usually guarding guys 4 or 5 inches taller and he holds them down. He also knows how to get good position on offense and defense and he can handle the ball."
Klaas said he believes Tyszkiewicz didn't get the attention he deserved from four-year schools because he missed time due to injury in high school.
"He's a good student and will go on to play at a four-year college," Klaas said. "He's been starting here ever since the fourth game of his freshman year. He's a solid kid and he has a great family, who give him and our program great support."
Elmhurst: Four members of the wrestling team qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships as the Bluejays finished second at the NCAA Great Lakes regional last Saturday.
Jake Oster at 125 pounds, Kyle Katz, 157 and Mark Corsello at 285 all won regional titles and Jeff Kastel (Hinsdale Central) qualified by placing second at 149.
Kastel's semifinal win tied the single-season Elmhurst record for victories with 39.
All four of the qualifiers are nationally-ranked in their weight divisions.
Ben Salabura at 133, Tony Doan (165) and Greg Horn (174) all finished fifth in the regional meet.
"I was extremely happy with the way our team wrestled this past weekend," said Elmhurst coach Steve Marianetti. "We were fortunate to have four wrestlers qualify for the NCAA championships, which puts us in a great position for a strong finish to the season."
Sending four qualifiers to nationals matches an all-time Elmhurst record, established 2005 when the Bluejays finished eighth in the nation.
Wheaton: Junior Kent Raymond was recognized as the CCIW Player of the Week after he helped lead the team to a pair of victories last week that secured the Thunder a spot in the CCIW Tournament.
Raymond averaged 31 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals last week. He shot 50 percent from the field, and 46.2 percent from 3 -point range.
Raymond, a junior guard, scored 25 points in a 65-56 win at Millikin last Wednesday and then on Saturday he tied his season-high with 37 against Elmhurst.
During the Elmhurst game, Raymond moved into 11th place on Wheaton's all-time scoring list with 1,504 career points.
