Nominate volunteers, including youth, for village award

A new year has arrived and time once again to think of that individual adult, youth or organization that has volunteered the most to the Schaumburg community.

And yes, local schools, that means you, too.

Yes, you.

Nominations for youth volunteers of the year have always lagged significantly behind the numbers for adults and organizations, even though there's plenty of evidence that young people are contributing significantly to the community as well.

So teachers, principals, counselors and all other adult advisers: Make it your new year's resolution to give the young volunteers you know a fighting chance to be recognized for all they do.

You have until April 1 to make a nomination, so don't let a lack of time be your excuse.

Schaumburg's Volunteer of the Year Luncheon, at which all nominees will be recognized, will be held April 15 at the Chicago Marriott Schaumburg Hotel, with a guest speaker yet to be named.

For more information and to receive a nomination form, contact Special Events Coordinator Roxane Benvenuti at (847) 923-3605.

And don't forget nominations for those selfless adults and good-hearted volunteer organizations, either.

The party's tonight: Pre-teen sports stars are invited to The Party's Here from 7 to 10 p.m. today at the Schaumburg Park District's Community Recreation Center, 505 N. Springinsguth Road.

Wear your favorite sports jersey or uniform to tackle a night of fun. The Party is a safe, supervised, action-packed program held the first Friday of every month for seventh and eighth graders of District 54 and area parochial schools.

It features a DJ, BAGGO, dodgeball, wallyball, Dance Dance Revolution and more.

Snacks and soda will be available to buy. It's requested you bring bills smaller than a $20. Schaumburg Elementary District 54 dress codes apply, and dressing up is optional.

The theme of this month's Teen Advisory Board meeting from 5:45 to 7 p.m. Tuesday will be "Wii Need a Study Break." It will include Wii bowling tournaments as well as food and beverages. New members are welcome.

Anime enthusiasts in sixth to 12th grades can watch an episode of a popular series and discuss it with other fans during Anime Viewers from 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 22 in the Audiovisual Department of the central library. The discussion will be led by artist Shannon Townsend.

Aspiring anime artists of any skill level in sixth to 12th grades are invited to participate in the Teen Anime Club from 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 28 in the Youth Services Classroom at the central library. Townsend will be on hand again to teach students how to draw anime and manga figures.
