Bartlett night out an award-winner
p class="News">The Bartlett Police Department's efforts putting on the 24th annual National Night Out in August have been recognized with a first-place trophy -- and a tall, shiny one to boot.
Bartlett recently took top honors out of thousands of towns with populations between 15,000 and 49,999 people nationwide to participate in National Night Out.
National Night Out is a crime and drug prevention campaign sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. In 2006, it drew 34 million participants made up of citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials.
It's the third first-place finish since 2002 for Bartlett, which saw about 5,000 residents show up at festivities spread out over a weeklong period.
"I was thrilled with the community participation and turnout," said officer Michael Tavolacci. "All those who attended are a clear indication of the community we have become."
Events included a family tailgate, a flashlight walk, a pool party, multiple neighborhood block parties and a skateboarding competition at the Bartlett Skate Park. Miss Illinois USA Mia Heaston, Miss Illinois Ashley Hatfield, the DK BMX Stunt Team and the Jesse White Tumblers made appearances.
"How many cities have their village president come in on a Segway?" said Sgt. Mike McGuigan, who led Bartlett's participation in National Night Out. "I guarantee just one."
Bartlett's 54 sworn officers mingled with residents, promoting police-community partnerships, neighborhood safety, awareness and cooperation.
Officers Tavolacci, Tammy Schulz and Eric Tellschow were singled out for their contributions and creative ideas.
Bartlett wasn't the only area town lauded for its efforts.
Mundelein, South Elgin and West Chicago placed in the top 50 in the same population category, and Wood Dale and Itasca were recognized for towns with under 15,000 people.
