Trojans' Curtis wins sectional
After losing to Barrington by more than 80 points at last Saturday's Mid-Suburban League boys swimming meet, Fremd returned the favor, scoring 289 to Barrington's 273 Saturday at the Barrington sectional. Cary-Grove finished third with 170, followed by Conant (138.50) and Woodstock (95).
"Fremd was outstanding," said Barrington coach Jim Bart. "They were ready to go and deserved to be the winner."
Cary-Grove's Brent Curtis, who won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.14, will also be swimming the 100 free at Evanston next week after making the cut at 47.65.
Jacobs' Sean Kelly advanced in the 100 backstroke, finishing in a time of 55.09. Kelly also finished second in the IM with a state-qualifying time of 2:00.56.
Defending sectional champion Barrington opened the meet in record fashion winning the 200 medley relay in a sectional- and pool-best time of 1:38.44.
Fremd took second in 1:39.98 and Cary-Grove finished third (1:40.06), as both teams posted state-qualifying times.
In the 100 fly, Cary-Grove junior Michael Kinross, who set the a record last year when he went 53.69, equaled that time on Saturday as he hit the wall in second place.
"I didn't even know I held the record until Wednesday, but it's OK (that I lost it)," said Kinross, who also made the state cut in the 200 IM (2:01.10). "I'm kind of tapered, and I haven't shaved yet, so I'm really excited for next week."
Men's basketball
Judson 92, Calumet 91: Justen Boyd's free throw with three seconds left lifted Judson University (16-8, 9-2) to a 92-91 win over Calumet College in CCAC play. With the win, Judson will now play for the CCAC championship on Wednesday night against Trinity Christian.
Boyd scored 27 points to lead four Judson players in double figures. Ilija Bojanic canned six 3-pointers for 23 points while grabbing 9 rebounds. Chris Oates finished with 16 points and now needs just 16 points to reach 1,000 career points and Dewayne Robinson had 10 points.
Women's basketball
Judson 80, Calumet 50: Cruising to a 30-point victory, Judson University (11-14, 6-3) won its sixth CCAC game of the year.
Alicia Rovertoni had 17 points as the leading scorer but Devonaye Henderson had her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Both Heidi Rosenbaum and Theresa Larson recorded 13 points for the Eagles.
ECC 61, Wright 55: Elgin Community College defeated Wright being led offensively by Ariana Topps, who had a team-high 18 points. Karin Herrera had 16 points as well for ECC.
