Scouting: Waubonie Valley @ Bartlett
Waubonsie Valley (1-1, 0-0) at Bartlett (1-1, 0-0)
Upstate Eight Conference
Game time: 7:30 p.m. today, at Streamwood's Millennium Field.
Last year: Did not play.
Last week: Waubonsie Valley 22, Oswego 18; Crystal Lake South 40, Bartlett 0.
Outlook: Waubonsie Valley, a preseason favorite in the Upstate Eight, visits the defending champion. The Warriors rallied to beat Oswego with just seconds left, while Bartlett took its first shutout loss since falling 39-0 in the first round of the 2006 Class 8A playoffs to eventual champion Wheaton Warrenville South. Waubonsie Valley, facing Bartlett for the first time in coach Paul Murphy's five years with the Warriors, gets a boost with the return of running back Tre Clark. The senior was sick and missed Oswego after running 18 times for 146 yards in the opening 25-17 loss to Naperville Central. Bartlett must also counter last week's heroes: quarterback Kenny Clay, who was 13-of-22 passing for 155 yards and tossed the decisive 4-yard touchdown to 6-foot-3 receiver Eric Theilacker; and middle linebacker David Greenspan, who returned a fumble for a touchdown in the opener and last week made 10 tackles and caused 2 fumbles. Returning All-Area receiver Scott Kuehn is a constant thorn with 9 catches for 171 yards this season. A week after always-physical Bartlett beat Hoffman Estates 47-0, Crystal Lake South ran for 232 yards while holding the Hawks to minus-20 on the ground. Line play should be fierce. "I'm sure they're not happy with the way they played last Friday," Murphy said.
Next week: Waubonsie Valley at St. Charles North; Bartlett at Neuqua Valley.
