Naperville collects brush:
Naperville's free fall brush collection begins next week. The city is divided into four collection districts and each one takes a full week to complete. Residents whose garbage is collected on Monday should place brush on the parkway by Sept. 7. Those with Tuesday garbage collections should have their brush out by Sept. 13; those with Wednesday or Friday collection by Sept. 20; and those with Thursday pickups on Sept. 27. Vote for NEDSRA:
The Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association needs the public's support to win a Nike Back Your Block grant for its adaptive sports programs. Anyone with an e-mail address can vote by visiting the association's home page at www.nedsra.org. The deadline is Sept. 15. The grant will help young athletes who wish to play golf, tennis, basketball or soccer, but must overcome a physical disability. The association provides an accessible, full-sized gymnasium, sports wheelchairs and trained coaches who help youths with disabilities. Organizations with the most votes will receive higher consideration to win $2,500 and $5,000 awards. For details, call (630) 620-4500.
Addison safety check results:
A multijurisdictional roadside safety checkpoint involving the Addison, Lombard, Villa Park and Wood Dale police departments, DuPage County sheriff's office and DuPage County Forest Preserve police netted 53 citations and arrests from 8 p.m. to midnight Aug. 29 at 240 E. Lake St. in Addison. The majority of citations went to drivers who did not have vehicle insurance. The goal of the checkpoint was to educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving. There were no DUI arrests.
Contest winner announced:
The winner of the first Connect the Generations Writing Challenge will be announced at noon today during the 14th annual Senior Lifestyle Expo at the Drury Lane Theatre & Convention Center in Oakbrook Terrace. The winner will be chosen from a group of nine finalists who wrote essays on the topic "Wisdom in Aging ... Sharing Your Journey." "Senior Idol" contestants ranging in age from 61 to 95 will audition starting at 10 a.m. today. "Senior Idol" finals begin at 12:45 p.m. Thursday. The expo is organized by the Northeastern Illinois Area Council on Aging. Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is $3. For information, visit www.SeniorLifestyleExpo.org.
Itasca road check:
Illinois state police and Itasca police will conduct a joint roadside safety check Friday evening in Itasca. Officers will be looking for drivers who are under the influence, transporting open alcoholic beverages, operating unsafe vehicles and driving with a suspended or revoked driver's license.
Will hits recycling mark:
Will County officials say they've collected more than 1 million pounds of recycled electronic goods in slightly more than two years. The county opened four permanent recycling sites in July 2008 and now has 10, with an 11th scheduled to open this week. One million pounds is the equivalent of 23,700 microwave ovens, 13,650 televisions or 63,350 printers, officials said.
