Committee ends hearings:

The DuPage County Board's veteran services ad hoc committee ended several weeks of special hearings to determine what, if anything, was needed to provide better access to social and veteran services for former military personnel living in the county. The committee will submit a report to county board Chairman Robert Schillerstrom by Sept. 30, which is expected to show no great need for significant changes. The report is expected to suggest staffing and training someone who will serve as a liaison between the county's veterans assistance commission and human services department.

Lynfred Oktoberfest:

Lynfred Winery's annual Oktoberfest will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday at 15 S. Roselle Road, Roselle. The event includes German sing-a-longs, grape spitting, grape stomping, cork tossing and a pig roast. Sweets and wine tastings will be available. Roselle canned food drive:

The Roselle Police Department is participating in a canned food drive through mid-November. Canned foods can be dropped off at the police station, 103 S. Prospect St.; village hall, 32 S. Prospect St.; Claus Recreation Center, 555 W. Bryn Mawr Ave.; and the post office, 256 Central Ave. The food will be brought to the Northern Illinois Food Bank for distribution. Fall into the Arts benefit:

Addison Center For The Arts' fourth annual Fall Into the Arts dessert and wine reception, spotlighting high school students with dance and music, will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the village rotunda, 1 Friendship Plaza. Admission is $10 at the door. Children's artwork will be available for purchase and raffles will be held throughout the event. Proceeds will be donated to the Addison Center for the Arts. White House staffer at AU:

The deputy assistant press secretary to President George W. Bush will discuss politics and his White House service at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 in Aurora University's Alumni Hall, 1410 Marseillaise Place, Aurora. Pete Seat spent more than three years on the White House staff working for Tony Snow and Dana Perino. He served as a White House spokesman and organized trips for the White House press corps. His speech is free and sponsored by the university's political science club.
