Celebrate the last days of summer at Lake in the Hills fest

Summer is winding down and the village of Lake in the Hills has planned one spectacular send-off that includes everything from bubble experts to a bags tournament.

The ninth annual Lake in the Hills Summer Sunset Festival will run from Friday to Sunday, today through Sept. 6 and offers one last "staycation" opportunity for budget-conscious families looking to squeeze every last sweet drop from their summer.

The fest opens at 3 p.m. today with a carnival and beer garden that will remain open until 10:30 p.m. A Sunset 5k race will take off at 7 p.m. and live music will be running on the main stage from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Kids Korner events will be happening all day Saturday and Sunday, featuring clowns, an ice cream eating contest 3 p.m. Saturday and a performance by bubble expert Geoff Atkins from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. During his performance Atkins use bubbles of different shapes and sizes to entertain and amuse his audience.

The festival has added a Baggo tournament and a Got Talent? competition on Sunday to the lineup this year. In years past the festival has had an America Idol-style singing competition but decided to expand the event parameters to include musical groups and other types of performances for its Got Talent? event for little bit of added twist.

The show, set for 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, will feature 25 different acts and is free to the public.

The festival will also run a special "all you can ride wristband" promotion during a special time period each day.

Old-time favorites like the Melon Propellin' event and classic car show will be back too.

Fair organizers are confident that despite the economy the festival will draw a good crowd. After all, you can't put a price on fun.

"We're hoping people will have fun, that's what it's all about. It's not so much about making money, it's about and getting families out there when so many have had to forgo vacations because of the economy," event chairwoman Denise Haugk said.
