Wrap: Montini rolls over Wave

Montini played a strong first quarter Tuesday night, a great second quarter and an amazing third quarter.

St. Edward simply had a long night.

In the end the Broncos overpowered St. Edward's girls basketball team for an 83-30 Suburban Catholic Conference victory in Lombard.

"We were still within 9 with two minutes left in the second half, and then they went on a run," St. Edward coach Michelle Dawson said. "Unfortunately, we didn't make the defensive stops and the rebounds that we needed tonight and made too many turnovers."

Montini (19-5, 11-0) led 19-9 after the first quarter but stretched that margin to 41-18 when Chrissy Fletcher's lay-in just beat the second-quarter buzzer.

Then it got worse for the Green Wave (10-10, 6-6). Montini opened the third quarter on an 11-0 run and outscored the Wave 30-5, holding St. Edward to just 5 Katie Yohn free throws.

Yohn, a 5-foot-11 junior, finished with 12 points 6 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.

"Katie was playing hard," Dawson said. "Montini threw a box-and-one at her, they were throwing two girls at her. She tried hitting the open girls. Unfortunately, some of our buckets just wouldn't drop early to get us in sync, and it just kind of fell apart."

Michala Johnson, a 6-3 Montini sophomore, led all scorers with 25 points.

Girls basketball

Schaumburg 60, Conant 40: Senior Night turned out to be a real special night for Schaumburg's girls basketball team.

Special because the Saxons were able to move into a first-place tie in Mid-Suburban West with the chance to claim a berth in next Wednesday's Mid-Suburban League championship by winning at Palatine Friday night.

Special because one senior who normally doesn't start, Kaitlin Marchok, got the call Tuesday and collected the Saxons' first bucket and rebound in route to a convincing 60-40 triumph over visiting Conant.

Schaumburg (23-4), Conant (20-5) and Fremd (14-9) are all 7-2 in the West. Fremd hosts Conant Friday.

"I was so excited for Kaitlin," said Saxons senior Kylie Castans, who scored a game-high 18 points with 6 assists and 5 rebounds. "Even coach (Bill) Murmann and coach (Jay) Culloton had a good feeling we were going to win after Kaitlin did that."

That feeling was right on as the Saxons pulled ahead 27-11 midway through the second quarter and then held off a Conant rally that reduced the lead to 4 points late in the third quarter.

After a layup by Michelle Rawleigh pulled Conant to within 35-31 with 2:25 left in the third quarter, Schaumburg went on a 17-1 run to take control.

Castans started and ended the burst with 3-pointers while Taylor Kosla had one in between.

"We cut it to 4 , then made too many unforced erros," sid Cougars senir guard Araian Zades. "Losing by 20 was a surprise. But they we ready for us after our first game. I think they said that (close game) was not going to happen in their gym. But we gave it our best shot."

Batavia 48, St. Charles East 32: The Batavia girls basketball team celebrated seniors JoAnna Wagner and Tracy Ferguson's last game on the Bulldogs' home court in the best way possible -- with a win.

The Bulldogs beat nonconference opponent St. Charles East, 48-32, in Batavia Tuesday.

Wagner and Ferguson were honored before the game and both were in the starting lineup. Wagner had limited playing time due to an ACL injury she suffered earlier this season. She made the best of her time in, as she scored the last basket of the game at the buzzer.

Ferguson finished the game with 9 points, 3 steals and 5 rebounds.

"I think we were all just pumped," Ferguson said. "It is our last year, so we just went all out."

Even though it was Senior Night, a trio of Batavia juniors, Natalie Tarter, Melissa Norville and Kara Lydon, helped the Bulldogs to a 10-0 run after St. Charles East led early in the game.

The run began at the end of the first and continued into the second quarter, when the Bulldogs outscored the Saints 19-8 for a 26-11 lead at the break.

The Bulldogs (19-4 overall) kept their double-digit lead for the rest of the game. The Saints came within 11 twice in the third quarter, but Batavia responded every time.

Lydon led all scorers with 11 points. Jaime Rust led the way for the Saints (14-10) with 9 points and 10 rebounds.
