Volunteers sought for shelter:

With Public Action to Deliver Shelter set to open a location next month in West Chicago, organizers are asking anyone interested in volunteering to attend an orientation meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at First United Methodist Church, 643 E. League hosts fall feast:

The Wheaton League of Women Voters will sponsor its inaugural Fall Feast at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at the DuPage County Historical Museum, 102 E Wesley St., Wheaton. The evening will feature dishes from Wheaton's My Thai Café and a presentation by David Morrison, assistant director of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform. NCC studies Great Lakes:

Former Newsweek correspondent and environmental journalist Peter Annin will speak Sept. 28 at Naperville's North Central College about the need to manage the Great Lakes as argued in his 2006 book "The Great Lakes Water Wars." North Central's international focus this year centers on global climate change with attention to North America and the Great Lakes region. Annin's talk is open to the public at 7:30 p.m. in North Central's Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St. For details, call (630) 637-5276.

Libraries hold joint read:

The public libraries of Warrenville, West Chicago and Winfield have teamed up for the second annual Reading Together, a celebration of reading that begins Sept. 26. This year's featured books - "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" for adults, "My Chocolate Year" for youth and "Boxes for Katje" for young children - center around a World War II theme. Special programs begin at 11 a.m. Sept. 26 at the First Division Museum at Canigny in Wheaton. Other events include a visit from author Candace Fleming at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at the West Chicago Library; a Soldiers in Grease Paint music program at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Warrenville Library; Fashions of World War II at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Winfield Library; and Big Band swing music and dancing at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the West Chicago High School.
