Prospect closes out persistent St. Viator
Close one.
That's how Prospect senior guard Lexi Glennon summed up Prospect's tight battle at the Cahill Gymnasium Tuesday night against St. Viator in Arlington Heights.
But Glennon helped make the "close one" another one for Prospect in the win column as the Knights ran their season-opening streak to 8-0.
Glennon hit 2 free throws with 2.7 seconds left to seal the deal for the Knights.
"Those were big free throws," said Prospect coach Martha Kelly. "Free throws win basketball games."
That's why Kelly also praised junior Sarah Hunt for her 2 free throws which gave the Knights a 43-42 lead with 1:04 left in the game. Ashley Wabik addd another for a 44-42 lead with 12.9 seconds.
"And rebounding at the end put us in that position to make those free throws," the coach added.
For the game, though, Kelly said would have liked to have seen better rebounding.
The Knights were led by Rachel Hunt's 5 rebounds and 3 from Sarah Hunt.
Glennon (3 steals, 2 assists) and Sarah Winans both scored 11 points for Prospect while Rachel Hunt added 10.
"It was a tough game", Glennon said. "We weren't really playing our game. We need to pick it up defensively. We have to get stops and get our transition game going."
St. Viator was led by Ronnie Mack (15 points), Meghan Malone (13) and Bridget Urbanus (7).
"I think we are a pretty good team," said Lions coach Paul Bjerkness. "We we got shots we wanted. We got good looks. Hopefully it will pay off in the future.
"I thought Ronnie played a tremendous game. Meghan Malone had a great game and Bridget had nice run for us in the third quarter. We rebounded well but we needed even more of them."
