Scouting Fremd @ Hoffman Estates
Fremd (7-0, 3-0) at Hoffman Estates (0-7, 0-3)
When 7:30 p.m. today at Dennis Garber Stadium
Last week Fremd d. Conant 31-14; Hoffman lost to Schaumburg 30-12
Outlook Fremd has a chance to make MSL history as it can clinch a share of the West title with a win and become the first program to win seven straight outright or shared division crowns by surpassing Hersey (1971-76). And last week's performance by Hoffman QB David Gutierrez (193 yards rushing) and RB Michael Reeves (90 yards, 2 TDs) in the triple option will keep the Vikings from looking ahead to Palatine. "If you take this team lightly they'll bite you," said Fremd coach Mike Donatucci, "like they almost bit us (27-23 last-second win) last year. Bill (Hoffman coach Helzer) is doing a good job of keeping those kids together." And that's keeping Helzer upbeat as the Hawks try to slow workhorse record-setting RB Evan Wright (1,337 yards, 18 TDs). "It's a good formula for them - pound the ball, don't commit penalties and turnovers and play solid defense," Helzer said. "That's why they're where they're at." Hoffman gets WR Mike Denight (pneumonia) back but is still without injured offensive threats Foyin Alade and Shammar McFarland. Fremd has won 12 straight in a series it leads 18-5.
