Navistar to lay off 275 at Mississippi defense plant
Navistar International Corp., the largest maker of blast-proof trucks for the U.S. military, said it will lay off 275 workers at a Mississippi factory because of declining production of the vehicles.
The reductions leave the West Point plant with 200 workers, Elissa Koc, a spokeswoman for Warrenville-based Navistar, said today.
The company lost out on a $1.06 billion contract with the U.S. Defense Department last month to build all-terrain trucks that would protect troops in Afghanistan from roadside bombs. Oshkosh Corp. received that order.
Navistar rose 9 cents to $39.46 at 11:18 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares have gained 85 percent this year.
