Previewing: Hinsdale Central

Hinsdale Central football coach Mike DiMatteo minces no words when talking about quarterback John Whitelaw.

"In my 22 years coaching, he's the best I've ever had," he said. "He combines it all."

No wonder the Red Devils are expected to vie for a return trip to the Class 8A title game. This time, after dropping last year's final to Maine South, the Red Devils may just win it all.

Whitelaw dominated defenses last season, throwing for 2,249 yards and 19 touchdowns while rushing for 1,316 yards and 21 touchdowns. He's one of eight returning starters to an offense that has the talent to put up some incredible numbers this season.

Four experienced receivers are back, including Alex Kirk, who caught 41 passes for 639 yards and 8 touchdowns. Junior running back Jake Knowles received significant playing time last year due to injuries and rushed for 5 touchdowns. David Lutz will also contribute in the backfield.

Center Jake Allen, one of the area's top linemen, and Jimmy Kallas return up front.

With only four starters returning defensively, early on Hinsdale Central may have to outscore teams. Linebacker Jason Rafferty, lineman Mike Rogers, Lutz and Knowles form the heart of the unit.

"It's going to take a little time to mature on defense, and that's OK," DiMatteo said. "We'll have to get these guys in the fire and get ourselves better every week."

The fire will be lit in the very first game as the Red Devils take on Class 7A power Wheaton Warrenville South. Glenbard West, which edged Hinsdale Central in Week 9 last year to claim the West Suburban Silver title, awaits in Week 3.

With the talent they have, the Red Devils appear up to the challenge.

"There's no doubt we need to be mentally up for every game, every week," DiMatteo said. "We have a huge schedule, but it'll be good for us in the long run."
