Hinsdale Central (1-1, 0-0) at Glenbard West (2-0, 0-0)

West Suburban Silver

Game time: 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Last week: Hinsdale Central 37, Proviso East 26; Glenbard West 27, Downers Grove South 14.

Last year: Glenbard West 9, Hinsdale Central 0.

Outlook: After playing in Week 9 the last two years, the preseason Silver favorites face off in the conference opener. A hard-hitting game last week took an injury toll on Glenbard West, which lost running backs Adam Bruere and Steve Jones in addition to third-year tight end Will Caspers. Hilltoppers coach Chad Hetlet declared all three questionable earlier this week. Luckily for Glenbard West, depth is on its side. Driscoll transfer Pierre Washington-Steel rushed for 90 yards last week, and fellow running back Trace Sorey should return from a shoulder injury. Injuries played a role in last year's game as well - the Hilltoppers were without all-state lineman Chris Watt while Hinsdale Central missed leading rusher Rich Zajeski. The Red Devils come into this one pretty healthy, and don't let last week's result deceive you. They built a 30-0 third-quarter lead before coach Mike DiMatteo pulled his starters. All-everything quarterback John Whitelaw already has thrown for 390 yards and 5 touchdowns and rushed for 304 yards and 3 scores. Alex Kirk has 15 catches for 290 yards and 5 touchdowns. Defensive newcomers Mac Burridge, Ryan Cassin and Peter Garcia get better each week. Even though it's still early in the season, this has all the makings of another Silver classic between state title contenders.

Next week: Lyons Twp. at Hinsdale Central; Glenbard West at Oak Park.
