Roskam hosts safety briefing:
U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, a Wheaton Republican, hosted a briefing on Tuesday with Federal Bureau of Investigation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Illinois Department of Justice officials on how to combat and prevent local violence. More than 30 local law enforcement and community leaders from more than 20 Northwest and West suburbs gathered at the Bloomingdale Public Library in response to the recent spike in violence in Hanover Park. Officials discussed internal resources, how to apply for various grants and ways to integrate national law enforcement agencies into the crime prevention process.
Car wash fundraiser:
The Des Plaines Police Department's Police Explorer Post 142 will host a car wash 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 28, at Des Plaines Car Wash, 513 S. River Road. Proceeds will go toward the cost of Explorers attending a statewide competition in August. Explorers are young adults who aspire to careers in law enforcement. Advisors and other police officers volunteer their time to train them in traffic accident investigations, handling domestic disputes, processing crime scenes, building searches and arrest techniques. Every year, Explorers attend a state or national conference at which they compete and learn valuable skills.
Firefighters host blood drive:
The Palatine Fire Department is teaming up with LifeSource for a blood drive from 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, at Palatine Fire Station 84, 220 W. Illinois Ave. Walk-ins are welcome. To schedule a donation time, call Capt. Doug Hoyt at (847) 202-6302.
Theater showing classic:
The 1965 Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, "The Sound Of Music," will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday, June 26, and Saturday, June 27, at the Des Plaines Theater, 1476 Miner St., as part of a fundraiser for the city's Deep Green Committee. Tickets are $5 at the door. The movie plot involves a woman who leaves an Austrian convent to become a governess to a widowed Naval officer.
Palatine police patrol streets:
The Palatine Police Department, with the assistance of grant funding by the Illinois Department of Transportation, has kicked off a traffic safety campaign to run through July 6. Officers will saturate streets, patrolling for those who drive impaired, drive recklessly and fail to wear safety belts. In addition, police will conduct roadside safety checks overnight Thursday, July 2, around Algonquin and Roselle roads and Dundee and Rand roads.
Bank hosts event for grads:
The Fifth Third Bank at 7580 Barrington Road is hosting a graduation party from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 27, to celebrate Hanover Park's Class of 2009. Festivities will include food and the chance to see Pink in concert. B96, which will be broadcasting live from the party, will give away tickets. Those attending can also enter the bank's college scholarship sweepstakes, and financial specialists will be on hand to provide advice and tips. The bank is located at 7580 Barrington Road in Hanover Park.
