Genealogical Society: The Kane County Genealogical Society will hear from member Linda Eder about the pioneer families of Schroeder Cemetery in Dundee Township. The Schroeder Cemetery is an abandoned burying ground on Route 72, west of Randall Road. Research indicates that the burying ground has never been tilled. Genealogists and researchers are attempting to locate the descendants of those 21 pioneer families. The group meets at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18 at the Geneva History Center, 113 S. NAMI: The National Alliance on Mental Illness for DeKalb, Kane-South and Kendall Counties will hold a general meeting on Saturday, June 20 at the Behavioral Health Building in the Dunleavy-Walsh Conference Room on the Provena Mercy Center Campus, 1330 N. Lake St., Aurora. Coffee will be served at 9:30 a.m., and the speakers will begin at 10 a.m. Gloria Mathewson from the Kendall County 708 Board and Jerry Murphy from the Kane South 708 Board will be speaking on the state of mental health in the counties they represent. Batavia VFW: Batavia Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1197 will host a Father's Day Car Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 21 at the post home, 645 S. River St., Batavia. Admission is free for spectators, though donations are welcome. Registration for the car show will be from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost for registration is $20. Pre-1983 American-made vehicles only. There will be 101 trophies awarded at 3 p.m., as well as a 50-50 raffle. Lunch will be served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with beverages available. Proceeds to benefit Batavia VFW Post 1197 associated charities and their programs.

On Friday, June 19, enjoy "Surf and Turf" from 5 to 8 p.m. The meal includes potato, salad, roll with butter, dessert and coffee. Cost is $14 per person. For details, call (630) 879-9630.

Wayne Countryside Garden Club: Wayne Countryside Garden Club presents "Garden Walk 2009" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 27. Five gardens will be on the walk this year, varying from wooded lots, a property with unusual trees, as well as pool, pond and cottage gardens. United Commercial Travelers: The United Commercial Travelers-Elgin Council 412 will host their eighth annual spaghetti dinner and raffle from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 27, at 280 S. Melrose, Elgin. Donation is $10 per person and covers a raffle and an all-you-can-eat dinner including a salad bar and desserts. The raffle includes $50 gift cards for Wal-Mart and Target and two certificates for two players to play nine holes at the Streamwood Oaks Golf Club. Winners need not be present. Fox Valley Bicycle and Ski Club: The club will host its 40th annual Swedish Days Ride on Sunday, June 28. The ride will begin and end at Howard B. Thomas Elementary School, 575 Plato Road, Burlington. Choose your map with distances ranging from 25 to 124 miles. Register via the club's Web site www.fvbsc.org. Fox Valley Woodworkers Club: On Tuesday, July 7, Fox Valley Woodworkers Club will welcome Bill Gullberg, the Chairwright of the Windsor Academy of Chairmaking as its guest speaker. The club meets on the first Tuesday of every month from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, 8 S. Lincoln Ave., Batavia. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The club has been known as a gathering place for woodworking enthusiasts of all ages and levels of experience since 1984. Visitors are welcome.
