After an exceptional showing at the state Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) competition earlier this year, students from Bartlett High School headed south to Nashville, Tenn., to compete against 4,500 students from across the United States in the 2009 National HOSA Leadership Conference June 24-27.
Bartlett High returned home with a total of 16 national awards, including three medalists: Ashley Stevens, first place National Gold Medal for Concepts of Health Care, knowledge test; Naushin Vahora, second place National Silver Medal for Medical Assistant Clinical; and Julius Aguas, third place National Bronze Medal for Physical Therapy.
Other national winners from Bartlett High included:
Veterinary Assisting: Erin Doherty, fifth place. Administrative Medical Assisting: Nicole Buddemeyer, fifth place; Bindi Patel, seventh place; and Katie Kujak, ninth place. Researched Persuasive Speaking: Andrea Kobylinski sixth place. Medical Math: Raj Hirpara, sixth place; and Jermaine Dictado, 10th place. Nursing Assisting: Thomas Niewiara, sixth place; and Xiuli Shen, 10th place. Knowledge Tests: Human growth and development, Maddalena Buscemi, eighth; medical assisting clinical, Stephanie Swiatlo, eighth; clinical specialty, Mitchell Fernandez, ninth; and nutrition, Roshni Delwadia tenth.
• Congratulations to Chloe Costello, a 12-year-old cellist from Deer Park, who won a first place trophy Saturday, June 27, at the 39th annual Granquist Music Competition in Geneva. The piece she performed was Humoresque by Dvorak.
Costello is now entering her fifth year of studying cello. Her teacher is Lisa Lithall of Arlington Heights. She is also entering her fourth year of playing trumpet, and plays with the Barrington Middle School Station and Jazz bands. She studies trumpet with Dennis Montgomery of Barrington.
• Buffalo Grove High School principal Carol Burlinski and associate principal Sue Carley were among 400 educators from the United States, who traveled to China for a one-week educational tour to learn about Chinese culture and
language in an effort to build and expand Chinese language programs in U.S. schools.
• Illinois State University, Normal, College of Business honored recent graduate Mary Anderson of Schaumburg with its 2009 Outstanding Senior in Business Teacher Education Award. The award is for a senior majoring in business teacher education with a 3.3 GPA or higher and at least 90 hours completed. An awards committee reviews candidates' credentials and selects the recipient. Anderson, a Schaumburg High School graduate, is the daughter of Richard and Susan Anderson.
• Chris Pethley, Wynstone Golf Club, North Barrington, member and club president, shot a -2 par, 70 at The Village Links of Glen Ellyn Monday, June 29, in the CDGA US Senior Open Qualifier. In doing so, he was not only the low amateur and medalist he also solidified himself a spot in the 2009 US Senior Open field. The US Senior Open Championship will be played Thursday, July 30, through Sunday, Aug. 2, at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
