Defenders sell books

The McHenry County Defenders will hold a used book sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at 1146 McConnell Road in Woodstock. The event will raise money for the nonprofit, environmental preservation group. There are thousands of books available to chose from. The books will cost $3 a bag. Call (815) 338-0393.

Legion serves breakfast

Elgin Post 57 American Legion, 820 N. Liberty St., Elgin, will serve breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. today. The menu includes eggs to order with sausage, bacon and potatoes for $4.50 or two pancakes, sausage or bacon for $5. Order an omelet, with cheese, mushrooms green or red peppers, onions or hot peppers, for $5. The breakfast is open to the public. Call (847) 741-1684.

ECC gets tech ed donation

Elgin Community College recently received a donation of $5,000 from W.W. Grainger Inc. to help support students enrolled in the college's technical education programs. The donation will support five $1,000 scholarships for students studying welding, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and industrial manufacturing. Grainger is a Fortune 500 industrial supply company based in Chicago. Grainger's catalog includes motors, lighting, material handling, fasteners, plumbing, tools and safety supplies.
