Dist. 57 resignation
The Mount Prospect Elementary District 57 school board is one member short. Rich Benson, who has served two years, announced his resignation at the May 4 board meeting. According to the District 57 Web site, he cited new commitments in his personal life and the significant time required from board members. Before his current tenure on the board, he had served before, completing two terms of board service from 1997-2005. District 57 is now searching for a replacement to complete Benson's remaining two years. Those interested must complete an application by Friday, May 22. Marine League memorial:
The Northwest Suburban Detachment of the Marine Corps League will dedicate a new stone marker and plaque honoring Marines who fought in the battle of Belleau Wood in France in World War I. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, at the Belleau Wood monument site at Rand and Ballard roads, Des Plaines. The rain date is Thursday, May 14. Detachment members will be joined by Marines from bases around the nation who are participating in Marine Week in Chicago. Guests include the daughter of Marine Cpl. Edwin C. Ludwig, who fought in 1918 in the Battle of Belleau Wood, considered the most important Marine battle of the war because the 4th Marine Brigade stopped a massive German advance on Paris. Throughout this week, Marines will volunteer at food kitchens and community parks, share stories of their service with local students, conduct musical performances at area landmarks, encourage children to become active through physical fitness challenges and showcase Marine Corps technology at venues such as Arlington Park racetrack. The Northwest Suburban Detachment of the Marine Corps League meets at Merle Guild American Legion Post 208 in Arlington Heights.
Click It or Ticket in Hoffman
Starting this week, Hoffman Estates police are conducting a special "Click It or Ticket" enforcement. From Friday, May 15, through Sunday, May 31, police will crack down on seat belt violators and watch for children who are not properly restrained in safety seats. The program is sponsored by IDOT and is intended as a "high-visibility enforcement."
Library honors volunteers
The Palatine Public Library District honored adult volunteers at a luncheon last month. The seven individuals recognized, who have collectively worked more than 4,000 hours for the library, were: Irene Jost, Melva Netzeband, Elizabeth Reh, Gail Richardson, Howard Schersten, Patricia Struble and Helen Veschuroff. Hoffman High School events
Hoffman Estates High School will host three fundraisers this month for its sports teams. Football Fun Night goes from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 16. Adult admission is $10; kids are $7. The event features games including bean bags, Wii, Guitar Hero and others. Proceeds benefit the football team's summer trip to Augustana College.
