Derailment affecting Glenview-area traffic
Part of Shermer Road in the Glenview area is still closed this morning after a freight train derailed and struck a second, standing train Sunday.
Fire officials say 17 cars derailed around 3 p.m. near the border of Glenview and Northbrook at Willow and Shermer roads. A spokesman for Union Pacific Railroad said the tracks belong to Union Pacific.
Officials said they evacuated a nearby strip mall as a precaution and that debris was spread along the tracks and tied up traffic in the area, including part of Shermer Road. The road south of Willow Road will remain closed the next few days, while authorities assess the damage, officials said.
Northbrook officials said none of the three people aboard the freight train had major injuries. Officials with Metra said there would be no impact on commuter service.
