Libertyville has White stuff in victory
"Tubs" subs.
Megan White does it well, in fact. The Libertyville junior has seemingly found her niche coming off the bench early in the girls basketball season.
But the nickname "Tubs?"
During the Wildcats' North Suburban Conference crossover with visiting North Chicago on Thursday night, White's friend and her kid sister showed their support by holding up signs, one of which read "Go Tubs."
White's friend tabbed her with that peculiar nickname.
"I don't even know (what it means)," White said. "She made it up as a joke in like freshman year. I don't even know why. It's just supposed to be funny. She's funny."
White helped make sure all of Libertyville's fans had a fun time.
The super sub scored a game-high 18 points, as the Wildcats cruised to a 62-40 win.
"I get more energy when I come off the bench," said White, who's been one of the Wildcats' top reserves through seven games.
Libertyville (4-3) led 14-10 after one quarter and extended the advantage to 33-18 by halftime, thanks in part to the play of Ali Haws. The volleyball star scored 12 of 13 points and had 5 of her 6 steals in the first half.
The Wildcats finished with four players in double figures, as Dana Eriksen (two 3-pointers) and Casey Hopper each scored 10 points. Maka Stewart hustled for 10 rebounds. White netted 12 points in the fourth quarter to help the Wildcats put the game away.
While Libertyville helped force North Chicago (0-5) into 34 turnovers, coach Kathie Swanson wasn't enamored of her team's defense.
"I didn't think we were smart defensively," she said. "I think we gave up shots that we shouldn't have given up, so I'm not happy with our overall performance defensively. I don't feel like we should give up 40 points.
"But offensively Megan White was a big sparkplug off the bench. She's been all year long, and that's what we got to continue to look for from her."
North Chicago got 11 points from sharp-shooting Raven Snowden, while Sarah Walker added 9 points and 11 rebounds for the Warhawks. Point guard Tatiana Webb, who scored 23 points against Round Lake on Tuesday, played only about a minute because of an ankle injury.
Coach Lawrence Brown has had the team only since the end of September, after Kendall Smith resigned. The Warhawks entered the season with little varsity experience.
"Trying to get a team together and find out who's who and what's going on has been an experience," said Brown, who coached in the North Chicago boys program the last six years. "We've been in every game from the beginning, but somewhere in there they break down mentally with a bunch of turnovers."
Wauconda 44, R-B 29: Kate Martino scored 10 points, as the Bulldogs defeated Richmond-Burton for the second time this season.
Wauconda (3-1) also received 9 points from Lauren Mead. Eleven Bulldogs scored in the nonconference game.
Cary-Grove 68, Antioch 52: The Sequoits lost the nonconference game despite 29 points from Andi Potkonjak.
The freshman sank 12 field goals, including five 3-pointers. Christine Gaborek and Brittany Deem each grabbed 10 rebounds. Gaborek also scored 8 points.
Antioch fell to 1-5.

CLC 71, UW-Waukesha 66: Tiffany Lehner had 25 points and 13 rebounds for College of Lake County.
Ashley Branden added 16 points, 9 rebounds and 8 steals for the Lancers (2-2). Libertyville graduates Kelli Goodwin and Ally Yarc contributed 12 and 9 points, respectively.
