Investigation to ID partial head found in Fox River continues

The McHenry County Coroner's Office continues to investigate a partial head found Wednesday night in the Fox River.

Coroner Michael Rein announced the investigation Thursday saying his office had been notified of the finding about 9:20 p.m. by the McHenry County sheriff. No location or other detail was provided.

“At this time, we have not yet been able to positively identify the remains that were found,” he said in a news release.

“We understand how difficult this uncertainty is for the families and loved ones awaiting answers, and our team is working diligently and with the utmost care to establish a positive identification as quickly as possible,” he added.

There was no update as of Friday morning, he said.

Whether the remains were connected to a fatal boating crash Saturday on the Fox River was not specifically mentioned, although Rein said his office continues to work collaboratively with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, McHenry County sheriff and McHenry Township Fire Department.

“We appreciate the public's patience and understanding as this process continues,” he said in the release.
