Severe weather closing suburban festivals, canceling fireworks shows

Severe weather is affecting some suburban holiday weekend festivities today.

Citing anticipated thunderstorms, Aurora officials have postponed a fireworks show originally scheduled for Friday night one week.

The show, which was to include musical performances and food trucks, now is scheduled for July 10 at RiverEdge Park and McCullough Park, officials announced on social media.

The move followed discussions between Aurora’s police and fire departments and city hall about Thursday night’s storms and the inclement weather expected Friday night, officials said.

Aurora’s Fourth of July parade, remains scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday.

Elsewhere, Mundelein officials “temporarily” shut down the Mundelein Community Days carnival and Mundelein Munch food booths this afternoon because of weather concerns.

“We are actively monitoring weather conditions and will provide updates as soon as they become available,” officials said on social media.

The carnival and food booths were shut down early Thursday night because of the thunderstorms, too.

The opening of Northwest Fourth Fest in Hoffman Estates was delayed today as well, the village reported on social media. The event will commence if weather permits.

Arlington Heights’ Frontier Days and Palatine Jaycees’ Hometown Fest both shut down temporarily as the deluge began.

Officials in other suburbs — including Highland Park, Roselle and Wauconda — say they’re closely monitoring weather forecasts and will decide later in the day if outdoor activities should be canceled or postponed.
