Flag Day event to feature first Stars and Stripes display at historic schoolhouse

The Schaumburg Township Historical Society will host an early 250th birthday celebration for America on Flag Day — Sunday, June 14 — from 1-3 p.m. at the historic Schaumburg Centre School. The free event at the 1872 schoolhouse features a Betsy Ross portrayal, replica flags from 1777, 1818 and 1872, flag etiquette demonstrations and more.

Outside the one-room schoolhouse, Scout Troop 196 will raise a flag that flew over the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield in 2026, donated by state Rep. Michelle Mussman. The scouts will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and demonstrate the proper handling and etiquette for the flag, such as how to fold the flag and how to dispose of it.

Inside, visitors can view replicas of historical flags including the Stars and Stripes flag from 1777 and learn about the history of the flag. “Betsy Ross” will share stories about George Washington and her life in early America.

The historical society will sell gently used American flags for a $5 donation. There will be family crafts, refreshments and a silent auction.

The schoolhouse will open at noon. It is at 222 E. Schaumburg Road, on the far north side of the old St. Peter’s Church. For details, visit ST-HS.org.
