High Five: Who had the area’s top prep basketball performances last week?

OK … so we didn’t get an IHSA state championship in girls basketball.

St. Edward, St. Viator and Rolling Meadows each made the trip to Redbird Arena in Normal, but no games were won last weekend. Each came home with a fourth-place trophy.

In boys basketball, meanwhile, five area teams advanced to Monday’s supersectional action with hopes of reaching the state semifinals this weekend in Champaign.

This edition of the High Five looks at the area’s top performances in the boys and girls basketball playoffs last week.

5. Hunter Stepanich, York

The Dukes won their first sectional title since 1982 when Stepanich converted a 3-point play with 5.4 seconds left to give his team a 37-36 win over Glenbard East in the Class 4A Bartlett sectional final.

The 6-foot-7 senior, a Princeton football and volleyball commit, scored only 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in the game, but his clutch play capped a rally from a 6-point deficit with under two minutes to play.

Stepanich scored 11 points and had 10 rebounds in a 58-44 sectional semifinal win over Glenbard North.

4. Savannah Lynch, St. Edward

Lynch’s season-long steadiness continued right to the end as the Green Wave finished fourth in the state in Class 2A.

The 5-10 junior guard helped seal the program’s seventh state trophy by scoring 24 points in a 57-51 overtime win over Phillips in the Dominican University supersectional.

Lynch also tallied 20-plus points in both losses in Normal. First she scored 21 points against Byron, then had 20 points against Pleasant Plains.

3. Edvardas Stasys, Benet

It wasn’t easy, but the Redwings notched their third sectional title in four years behind another balanced effort from their veteran lineup.

Stasys, as usual, was key. The 6-8 junior scored all of his 13 points in the second half of a 51-44 come-from-behind victory over Bolingbrook in the 4A Bolingbrook sectional final.

In Benet’s 67-30 sectional semifinal win over Yorkville, Stasys had 19 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.

2. Abby Ramel, Rolling Meadows

Ramel soared past the 1,000-point mark for her high-school career while leading the Mustangs to the 4A semifinals and a fourth-place finish.

The 5-11 senior scored 18 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in a 41-37 supersectional win over Carmel. In the semifinals, Ramel had 19 points and 10 rebounds against Loyola and finished the season with 17 points and 8 rebounds against Belleville East.

1. Charlie Pomis, Hersey

No area player came close to Pomis’ impact last week.

The 6-3 senior carried the Huskies to their first sectional championship since 1995 with wins over the top two seeds in the 4A Fremd field.

Pomis scored 33 points in a 64-50 win over Palatine in the semifinals, then had 31 points and 8 rebounds in a 73-66 double-overtime victory over No. 1 Fremd.
