Dining out: National Donut Day and McD’s Snack Wrap is back
National Do(ugh)nut Day
Friday is National Donut Day, a sacred day for those who practice Homersimpsonism (not an actual religion, more a way of life for us, err, I mean some people).
Fun inside journalism fact: AP style, which most newspapers use as a guideline, spells doughnut with the “ugh,” which is the sound I make when I try to reconcile most major brands and National Donut Day spelling it without. So if you see any inconsistencies, blame the stylebook.
Here are some specials on doughnuts for National Donut Day. Ugh.
Duck Donuts is celebrating Friday with one free cinnamon sugar doughnut per guest, no purchase necessary, in-store only. Additionally, guests can also enjoy the one-day-only offer of a half dozen cinnamon sugar doughnuts for $6, available in-store and online.
For the 15th straight year Dunkin’ will be offering a free doughnut with any beverage purchase on Friday. They’re also teaming up with lifestyle brand Stoney Clover Lane to offer a limited-time collection that will include The Dunkin’ Donut Pouch ($78), Dunkin’ Iced Coffee & Donut Bag Charms ($48 each) and Dunkin’ Patches ($18 each). They’ll be available online starting Friday.
Krispy Kreme is offering one doughnut for free on Friday, no purchase necessary. You can also grab a dozen original glazed for $2 with the purchase of any dozen at regular price.
Stan’s Donuts & Coffee is offering a free chocolate-dipped cake doughnut with any purchase on Friday, June 6. Some lucky guests may receive a special pink-colored chocolate dipped, meaning they’ve won free doughnuts for a year. The Donut Day celebration deal will be available at all Stan’s stand-alone locations, as well as Mariano’s kiosks throughout the Chicago area.
Speaking of Stan’s, Fry the Coop is teaming up with them for their Friday-only Croissant Donut Hot Chicken Sandwich, featuring hot chicken with honey butter on a Le Stan Croissant Donut that’s dusted with maple sugar. It’s $6.60, while supplies last, at all locations, including suburban restaurants in Bolingbrook, Darien, Elmhurst and Prospect Heights.
Pride Month
June is Pride Month, and while you don’t find a lot of dining specials associated with it, some local restaurants are asking you to help them support local nonprofits.
Beatrix Restaurant in Oak Brook will donate $1 from every Pineapple Habanero Margarita sold to Center on Halsted, the Midwest’s largest LGBTQ+ community center supporting LGBTQ+ health, wellness and cultural enrichment since 1973. Plus, Nosotros Tequila will match Beatrix’s donation.
Similarly, Ema in Glenview will donate $1 from every Cactus Queen cocktail sold to Glenview Pride, whose mission is to foster and promote a safe and inclusive environment for the LGBTQ+ community in Glenview.
Puttshack will donate 20% of each 9-hole mini golf game booked in June to It Gets Better, a national nonprofit organization with a mission to uplift, empower and connect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer youth around the globe.
Cool treats in the city
If you find yourself in the Fulton Market area and in need of a cool treat, “Iron Chef” and “Top Chef” winner Stephanie Izard’s Baobing Bar opens for the season on Friday.
Offering unique soft-serve sundaes, shaved ice, frozen cocktails and more, the summertime walk-up window on the side of Duck Duck Goat is open from 4:30-10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 4:30-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
The five flavors on the 2025 sundae menu include mango, chili crunch, strawberry guava, banana split and boozy pineapple.
Return of the Snack Wrap
Nine years ago, McDonald’s discontinued the Snack Wrap. Apparently this caused quite a stir among fans; over 18,000 of them signed a change.org petition and, in the announcement of their return, McDonald’s U.S. president Joe Erlinger read a series of impassioned tweets from desperate supporters who wanted nothing more than a piece of crispy chicken in a warm tortilla.
On July 10, the Snack Wrap — in spicy and ranch flavors — will return to participating restaurants nationwide. The chain said it’s “here to stay.”
