Dump truck spills salt, diesel fuel on Route 83, closes lanes for hours

A truck overturned on Interstate 290 near Addison on Wednesday afternoon, spilling debris across multiple lanes and prompting an emergency response that left lanes closed for several hours, officials said.

The semi-trailer dump truck was driving west on the expressway’s stretch over Route 83 around 1:20 p.m. when it hit the left wall and overturned, spilling salt onto the lower roadway, according to the Illinois State Police. The northbound lanes of Route 83 and the two left lanes of I-290 closed for several hours.

The crash also resulted in a diesel spill, which was cleaned by a hazmat team, according to Illinois State Police Sergeant Philip Ayala.

The scene was cleared at 7:30 P.M., and no injuries were reported.
