Hoffman-Schaumburg Knights of Columbus take to the streets

Each year, the Hoffman Schaumburg Council 6964 of the Knights of Columbus stands on street corners or outside of stores collecting donations and handing out Tootsie Rolls to raise money for people with intellectual disabilities.

This year’s Tootsie Roll Drive was another success. One hundred twenty-nine people, 81 Knights and 48 friends, volunteered, covering 225 shifts and working over 475 hours, to raise over $18,000.

When the collection jugs were emptied, in addition to the cash donations, volunteers found coins from around the world and a pocketknife. In past years, they’ve even received a wedding band.

All of the donations are given to local organizations that help people with intellectual disabilities. Some of those include GiGi’s Playhouse, Elite Stars, NWSRA/SLSF, The Kids Equipment Network and Ups for Downs.

Donations are still being taken until the end of October.
