Suburbs receive grants for EV charging stations

ComEd and the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus have awarded grants to suburban police departments and municipalities to support public safety and clean energy projects.

The Powering Safe Communities program has announced over $185,000 in grants across ComEd’s northern Illinois service territory. The grants are worth up to $10,000 each.

Among this year’s recipients, Palatine will purchase a public electric vehicle charging station for the village’s downtown and existing Metra commuter parking lot.

Oakbrook Terrace will use its grant to obtain solar-powered street crossing signage. Round Lake Beach will buy five solar-powered speed radar signs near parks and a school. Vernon Hills will use its grant for a public EV charging station installed at village hall.

The program has provided more than 200 grants totaling nearly $2 million since its inception in 2015.
