This year’s Earth Week Naperville celebrates the 54th annual Earth Day
Film festival, plant sales and other events take place throughout April and May
Naperville Park District, the City of Naperville and other local organizations are hosting numerous community events, sales and volunteer projects to celebrate Earth Week Naperville.
These community activities, commemorating the 54th annual Earth Day, which is April 22, center around the theme, “Planet vs. Plastics.” Community members are invited to participate in the special events and ongoing eco-friendly initiatives planned through April and May.
Serve the community by volunteering for nature-based projects at the Naperville Park District. A districtwide volunteering event will take place Saturday, April 20 from 9 a.m. to noon, where volunteers will assist with park maintenance tasks across three different parks including mulching, planting and weeding. The Naperville Police Department and Naperville Park District are offering a free shredding event from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, in the parking lot of Centennial Beach, 500 Jackson Ave. Community members are welcome to bring up to two boxes of documents to be shredded and recycled. One Earth Film Festival is hosting a weeklong environmental film festival from Wednesday, April 17, to Tuesday, April 23. Everyone is welcome to view specially selected films and shorts online that highlight Earth Day and sustainable practices. Learn more at www.oneearthfilmfest.org.
The Conservation Foundation will host the 33rd annual DuPage River Sweep on Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to noon. Saturday, April 20 is the deadline to register at theconservationfoundation.org/rivers-streams/river-sweep/.
Tree and plant sales are taking place throughout April and May.
Preorders for the city’s annual Arbor Day Tree Sale are available now until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, via www.naperville.il.us. Drive-through pickup will be Saturday, April 20, at the Naperville Public Works Service Center, 180 Fort Hill Drive.
The Morton Arboretum will host its own Arbor Day Plant Sale on April 25-27, in the Curatorial and Operations Center on the east side of the arboretum, 4100 Route 53 in Lisle. Hours will be 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Visit mortonarb.org.
Naperville Community Gardeners Plant Sale will be Saturday, May 11, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ron Ory Community Garden Plots, 811 S. West St. Visit www.napervillecommunitygardeners.com.
The McDonald Farm annual plant sale, hosted by The Conservation Foundation, will be Saturday, May 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McDonald Farm, 10S404 Knoch Knolls Road. Visit theconservationfoundation.org.
