Ski jumpers from around the world to compete at Norge Ski Jump tournament

The top ranked ski jumpers from around the globe will compete Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 27-28, at Norge Ski Club’s 119th Ski Jump tournament in Fox River Grove.

Athletes from Poland and Ukraine, along with top jumpers from the United States, will climb to the top of the 150-foot steel tower, strap on their jumping skis and come sliding down the scaffold at speeds of between 40 and 50 mph.

They are then lifted into the sky, maneuvering over 250 feet through the air in the hopes of achieving leaps that will land them in contention for top honors.

That will all take place on Jan. 28, with all the top guns in the sport competing.

On Jan. 27, a Junior competition will take place on the four or five smaller slides of different sizes to accommodate the various age groups. Young jumpers, starting from the ages of 5-6 and up to age 17, will compete.

The gates will open at 11 a.m. on both days and the competition will start promptly at noon. The event runs through 4 p.m. Food and drink, including alcoholic beverages, will be sold. No pets, sleds or alcohol will be allowed through the gates.

Pre-sale admission buttons are $20 at local merchants or online. At the gate, admission buttons are $25.

Norge Ski Club is at 100 Ski Hill Road, Fox River Grove. For details, call (847) 639-9718 or visit Norge’s website.
