Garden Club of Lake Zurich: 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Ela Area Public Library, 275 Mohawk Trail, Lake Zurich. A “Surprise in a Bag” floral design project will be presented by a club member. Houseplants — Cure for the Winter Blues: 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at the Carol Stream Public Library, 616 Hiawatha Drive, Carol Stream. Clark Hudmon, co-owner and general manager of The Barn Owl Garden Center, will host “Sure Cure for the Winter Blues: Houseplants.” The heart of winter is a perfect time to bring a little life and beauty into your home. The discussion will focus on picking the right plants for your indoor space and ensuring the health and beauty of your houseplants. This interactive session will be for all levels, from beginners to those with a green thumb. This event is held in partnership with the DuPage Organic Gardening Club. Don White, owner of Anything Orchids, will present “Growing Your First Orchid Successfully.” White will teach how to be successful orchid growers and correct orchid growing fallacies. Northbrook Garden Club: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, at United Methodist Church, 1190 Western Ave., Northbrook. Kim Hartman, landscape designer and horticultural educator, will highlight the best new annuals, perennials, roses, vegetables, shrubs and trees for 2024. Only those plants with unique new features that are successful in our region make the list. Come be inspired by new colors, forms and textures in plants for your landscape, garden and containers.
