Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra presents 'The Ukrainian Symphony' Nov. 12

The Elmhurst Symphony Association announces "The Ukrainian Symphony," its second concert of the season on Sunday, Nov. 12.

The concert, with conductor Stephen Alltop, will be at 4 p.m. at the symphony's home venue, Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill Road.

A pre-concert discussion led by assistant conductor Eli Chen will be held before the concert at 2:45 p.m. in the upper gathering area.

Esteban Batallán, principal trumpeter of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, is making his solo debut with the Elmhurst Symphony.

Also performing will be violinist Cecilia O'Malley, winner of the 2023 Stanger Young Artist Competition.

The program will feature: Carl Maria von Weber's "Der Freischütz Overture," Alexander Arutiunian's Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, Camille Saint-Saëns' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, and Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 2 (“Ukrainian”).

Carl Maria von Weber, a contemporary of Beethoven, was one of the founders of musical Romanticism (music which favors powerful expressions of emotion, often the emotions of the composers themselves). As a kind of musical father figure, von Weber inspired and influenced an entire generation of composers — including the other composers featured on this program.

Tchaikovsky's 2nd Symphony is one of the composer's most joyful works and earned high praise right from its premiere in 1872. Tchaikovsky used three Ukrainian folk songs throughout the symphony and, as Ukraine was known as “Little Russia” at the time, the piece was originally nicknamed the “Little Russian.” In April 2022, the work was retitled “Ukrainian” to more accurately reflect the musical inspiration for the work.
