Arlington Hts. commission names Kenneth Hood Award winner

The village of Arlington Heights Senior Citizens Commission announced the 2023 Kenneth Hood Award to Steven Schultz, volunteer and treasurer for the Arlington Heights Senior Center, Inc., Foundation.

The foundation serves as the nonprofit fundraising arm for the eight partner agencies in the Arlington Heights Senior Center.

The award is a once-in-a-lifetime honor for the Arlington Heights Senior Commission members to recognize, acknowledge and memorialize Dr. Kenneth Hood. Dr. Hood diligently and passionately served as a committed advocate and volunteer for a better life for his fellow senior citizens in Arlington Heights for many decades. On his 100th birthday celebration in 2006, Dr. Hood advised that it was time to "pass the torch" of volunteering.

The Dr. Kenneth Hood Award is announced in honor of his contributions to Arlington Heights.

Schultz joined Arlington Heights Senior Center Inc., in May 2014, and, with his professional background in finance, quickly became the Senior, Inc. treasurer, a position he still holds.

Schultz's contributions to Senior, Inc. have significantly impacted all who use the Arlington Heights Senior Center daily. In addition to monthly financial reporting, appropriate filing for the organization's nonprofit status and distribution of funding requests, Schultz saved Senior, Inc. thousands of dollars after he detected a scam that nearly depleted its bank account.

Schultz worked relentlessly to recoup every cent lost, allowing Senior, Inc. to continue supporting the Arlington Heights Senior Center and the eight resident agencies.

As Schultz wraps up nine years of dedicated service on the board, he remains a staunch supporter of Senior, Inc. and all programming at the Arlington Heights Senior Center. His attention to financial details has positioned Senior, Inc. to continue its mission to support the senior center for years to come.

Schultz has been the senior vice president and chief financial officer at Village Bank & Trust and Schaumburg Bank & Trust for 16 years. He has lived in Buffalo Grove for 32 years with his wife and three children.

The village of Arlington Heights Senior Citizens Commission consists of 10 members, residents of the village, appointed by the village president, with the consent of the village board, for three-year terms.

Commission members promote the needs and concerns of the senior citizens of the village and cooperate with the village government and all other governmental agencies in promoting the causes of senior citizens.

The commission annually recognizes exemplary volunteer service for older adults through the Dr. Kenneth Hood Award. The commission also is dedicated to working on Arlington Heights Age Friendly Livable Communities. The village is an AARP Certified Livable Community through the work of the commission, focusing on affordable housing, transportation and improved communication.
