Track and field throwers compete this summer at Hammerman USA

It's a niche, and definitely a good one.

Seeing the name of Jordan Wyman, Glenbrook South Class of 2023, in the June 17 shot put results of a throwers' meet at the Hammerman USA complex in Aurora is a reminder that track and field athletes have another outlet over the summer.

Hammerman USA, 485 Crane Ave., is a product of former University of Illinois record-setting hammer thrower Jim Coxworth, who opened the 5½-acre facility on Aurora's east side in 2019.

With two NCAA regulation cages, two shot put rings and a javelin field, he offers training as well as five Throwers League Series events over the summer.

Hammerman staff trains males and females of all skill levels from 11 to 19 years old, though athletes up to 30 may compete in the Throwers League Series meets. The next meet is July 15 with a final meet on Aug. 5.

Wyman, incidentally, threw the shot put 12.59 meters, about 41 feet, 4 inches, at the June 17 Throwers League meet. There were 42 athletes of various age groups competing in shot put that day.

A 2016 United States Olympian, Gwen Berry, threw the javelin 242 feet, 6 inches in a clinic held in Hammerman USA's first season in 2019.
