North Shore notes: Small business luncheon, Glenview Citizens Academy

Small business luncheon

State Sen. Julie Morrison of Lake Forest will present at a small business luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 20 at the Marriott Suites Deerfield, 2 Parkway North.

The event will offer an hour of networking and resource booths from state agencies, including the Small Business Advocacy Center, the Illinois Department of Employment Security, the Illinois State Treasurer's Office and the Illinois Department of Human Rights.

Lunch and a presentation by Khama Sharp, assistant director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, will be held from noon to 1 p.m.

Multiple chambers of commerce will be represented, including those of Glenview, Northbrook, Deerfield-Bannockburn-Riverwoods, Winnetka-Northfield-Glencoe and Highland Park.

Glenview Citizens Academy signup on

Enrollment in the third Village of Glenview Citizens Academy is active through Aug. 18. For 30 people 18 and older, the Citizens Academy provides a firsthand view of the people and services provided by Glenview's municipal government.

Running at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays from Sept. 14 through Nov. 2 (off the week of Oct. 1), the program is devoted to a different department or topic each week, including the village manager's office, 911 dispatch, finance, public works, and the fire and police departments. Department directors or supervisors and staff host each week's class and answer questions at the end of the sessions.

North Suburban Y Golf Fundraiser

Only a few days remain to register for the North Suburban YMCA's third Community Strong Golf Fundraiser July 13 at Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling.

Good for all skill levels, the event features a best-ball "scramble" format with a hole-in-one contest and many other contests throughout the course.

Included in the price are greens and cart fees, lunch before the 12:45 p.m. tee-off, snacks and beverages on the course and a 6-8 p.m. patio party with music, food and drinks, and awards.

Cook County overpayment refund

Northfield Township notes the Cook County treasurer's office said people may have overpayment refunds available to them.

According to the treasurer's office there is $85 million available in property tax overpayment refunds dating back 20 years with another $37 million in missing property tax exemptions going back four years.

Northbrook park commissioner trains at statewide seminar

Newly elected Northbrook Park District Commissioner Beverly Kumar recently attended the Illinois Association of Park Districts' 2023 Boot Camp. IAPD offers the educational course to elected officials and professionals at Illinois park districts, forest preserves, conservation, recreation, and special recreation agencies.

Kumar was elected to the board in April.

Glenview resident named Rotary district governor

Mary Bak of Glenview, member of the Rotary Club of Glenview Sunrise since 1991, has been named district governor of Rotary International District 6440, which covers North, Northwest and many Western suburbs.

She will head 65 Rotary clubs and some 2,000 members in her one-year term.

Currently development services manager for Kinzie Real Estate Services, Bak retired from the Village of Glenview in 2013 as director of Community Development/Special Counsel. In Rotary she'd served as an assistant governor, grants chair and district grants chair.

Pop-up pickleball in Northbrook

The Village of Northbrook and its park district have teamed to again offer a couple pickleball courts in downtown Northbrook.

Two courts will be available on a walk-on basis daily through Labor Day weekend in the commuter parking lot between the Metra train station and St. Norbert Church and school.

Equipment rental is available at Techny Prairie Activity Center, 180 Anets Drive. The rental is free, but there is a $25 deposit for each paddle and three balls.

Glenview School District 34 has stated a "great need" to hire educational associates, otherwise known as teacher aides or teacher assistants.

Successful candidates may earn a minimum of $18 an hour with increases for degrees, experience and placement in intensive roles, the district said.
