ECC Kids' College offers classes on dance, karate, videography, and firefighting

Elgin Community College's summer Kids' College returns in June with back-by-popular-demand classes and several new ones.

Children ages 5 to 16 can find something that sparks their interest and feeds their passion at elgin.edu/kidscollege.

"We've seen a lot of renewed interest in in-person kids' programming coming out of the last few years," said Tim Whitney, director of corporate and community education. "We're very excited about new Kids' College partnerships with leading community organizations like the Gail Borden Library's Digital Media Lab, Integrity Dance Studio, the Illinois Railway Museum, National Karate, and the University of Illinois Extension."

New to the Kids' College catalog are Firefighting 101, Phone Photography, Lights, Camera, Action, and various dance classes. Returning favorites include coding, drawing, STEAM exploration, photography, music, and more.

Youth, age 12 to 16, can learn basic firefighting tactics and strategies at "Firefighting 101" at ECC's state-of-the-art Emergency Services Center in Burlington.

The Integrity School of Dance is offering "Tot Hop" and "Pre-Dance" for ages 4 to 5; "Ballet/Tap" for ages 5 to 6; "Ballet 1," "Jazz 1," Tap 1," "Kid Hip Hop" and "Musical Dance Theatre" for ages 6-8; and "Tween" classes in ballet, tap and jazz, "Musical Dance Theatre," and "Jr. Hip-hop" for ages 9 to 12.

Kids, ages 4 to 7 and 8 to 16, can learn the basics kicks and punches and even break boards in "Karate 101" with National Karate-South Elgin.

LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve staff will lead classes for ages 5-10. In "Wonderful World of Insects," kids will learn about the vast diversity of insect life by examining the shapes, sizes, and colors of local insects. There will be models and specimens to explain insect anatomy and biodiversity. In "Birds of Prey," find out what features distinguish birds from other animals. They will use taxidermy bird specimens and other artifacts to demonstrate how owls, hawks, and other local predators find and catch their prey. Participants will listen to some audio recordings of various bird calls and engage in play to emphasize the interplay of predators and prey.

Classes start June 5 and run through August.

Most classes are held on the Elgin Community College Spartan Drive campus, with our Firefighter 101 program held at the Burlington campus.
